While preparing to perform on the night of January 11, 2025, I suffered a blackout and fell, resulting in a spinal cord contusion that came within four centimeters of taking my life.
The contusion affected motor function in my hands, rendering me barely able to feed and bathe myself, much less play a guitar. The vertebrae in my neck had to be fused together, a procedure that altered my vocal cords. During this time, I maintained my 'Fun Acoustic Demeanor' to keep up appearances, but I was in a very dark place. I didn't know why I was still alive.
With the support of family and friends, I started down the long road back. I couldn't shave for two weeks after the accident, as my hands weren't steady enough to hold a razor. Gradually, my hands regained their function. I was offered free assistance from multiple vocal coaches to help me learn to sing again. (Is the word 'again' necessary?) Most of all, I was given an abundance of patience and love, neither of which I had much of for myself at the time. By the grace of God, and with your love and support, I flipped off the Grim Reaper and walked away from the conversation. I returned to the stage just 71 days after the accident.
Nearly a year on, I'm still not sure why God didn't call me home. I'd like to think it has something to do with the ability He gave me to put music and words together, so I will continue to do that for as long as He lets me. I will never be able to fully repay the love and kindness that was shown to me throughout my recovery. I hope this record will suffice.
Thank you.
